Kinja'd!!!

My fiances 21 year old friends 2014 or so Jeep broke down in Northern Georgia... I saw it on Snapchat and texted her to figure out way happened. Before she even texted me back I guessed electronics or transmission. Well it was both. My 18 year old LS400 with 296,000 miles has left me stranded exactly 0 times. Not even a flat tire.

I know somebody who bought a new Cherokee Trailhawk and the thing already has been in the shop countless times and the transmission just plain sucks on them.

It's such a nice looking truck and the interior is so nice but cmon... They can't build something halfway decent.

My dad got a new 2015 ram 2500 6.7 cummins last year. Number of problems? Zero. Everyone who I know who owns an FCA product has had zero issues. Everyone I know who has owned Fords? Lots of issues.

Agreed. Like the 9 speed actuslly is complete shit. Can't make up its mind, downshifts going downhill and jerks like its a manual. They really need to stop focusing on making stupid things like the Hellcat and make their cheap cars suck less.

One of my Co-worker’s Cherokee did this a couple of weeks ago.

Since its a 2015 I would just assume it hasn't broken yet. It seems right as the warranty is about to go out or has gone out the cars go kaput.

That was exactly what Mr. R said during his Hellcat review

Im at work right now. Fixing broken down cars.

So far today:

Toyota Sienna with a busted t-stat housing. Came in on a wrecker.

Dodge Caravan with a busted radiator. Came in on a wrecker

Cadillac SRX with a leaky water pump. Drove in.

Toyota Solara with a dead alternator. Came in on a tow truck.

All between 75-150k miles.

And we still have all day!!! More to come Im sure.

My parents are on vacation from their business of fixing broken cars. 50 a week mostly Toyota/Lexus but that's because that’s what the shops specialty is. The patterns are easy to spot though. The highest RO average is on Chrysler Products.

To be fair, you answered why it doesn’t have any problems in the engine choice of the truck.

We do everything under the sun. Theres certain cars from each brand that has more issues than most. But overall, I wouldnt call any one brand shit or another unbreakable. Especially over the past 10 years. I will say, its cool to see some cars battle on with sooo much wrong with them. And other cars have 1 little thing go bad and get turned into paper weights. Ive seen this from all cars.

If it was a V6, I am not surprised at all. That horrible engine would blow occasionally on new cars. I saw a Challenger back off the truck, and blow its V6 engine. I saw a Grand Cherokee in a half an hour later with a blown V6 engine.

If it was the Hemi V8, I would be extremely surprised.

Neat.

Working in the industry over the last 10 years Ive learned that all cars are as shittty as they are reliable. Car A will have issues with window regulators, struts wearing out prematurely, hvac actuators, evap leaks. But it will still run. Car B will have one issue, oh lets say, severe oil consumption. In these cases theyll consider car B the most reliable because its just one issue, even if it will seize the engine.

I must be an anomaly then. All four of my Chrysler/dodge/ram products in the past 7-8 years have been dead reliable. Only the one made by Mercedes is starting to have electronic issues.

LS400 life. Mine just rolled over 220k miles. I have an annoying belt squeak on startup.

Time for a timing belt or tensioner. When our shop does the timing belt though they do everything. Water pump, tensioner, belt, and basically anything it touches it viable to be replaced.

That was all replaced 35,000 miles ago. It goes away after I drive it for 10-15 min.

That’s the difference between a new and old car.

On a new car, you can get breakdowns due to product defects... which may take a long time to fix because the manufacturer may not have a solution for the fix yet... or there is a backlog for parts.

On an old car, all the defects have been taken care of. Also the weak areas of a given model become known and you can take steps to mitigate the issue.

For example on the Ford Focus... the tie rods are a weak area. When they wear out, don’t replace them with the OEM ones, replace them with the more expensive Moog ‘problem solver’ ones.

On an old car, the breakdowns are caused by things wearing out. So as long as you do your homework and do the maintenance and preventative maintenance, an old car can be as reliable or more reliable than many new cars.

Check the tensioner. Depending on the quality of could be bad already. We only get oem parts on my car

Nope. The link up there breaks out engine and transmission issues, it doesn’t count other issues the same as power train issues. Your anecdotal experience is fine, and all cars can have issues, but some are statistically a better bet.

What’s funny is I bought my Abarth expecting it to have issues. Italian, Chrysler, turbo charged, new platform...

It’s been three years and has been perfect. Weird shit. My wife’s BMW needed around $10k in warranty work, and my dad’s M235i had to have the entire wiring harness replaced at 10k miles. I generally associate fun cars with unreliability. This Abarth has me stumped. I’d rather ride a bike than own a Lexus.
